Don’t Get Lucky – Get Results! 21 Ways to Rock Twitter
Happy St Patrick’s Day weekend from everyone here at the Finger Candy Media Blog (which is actually me, myself and my dog Sissy.) I always look forward to a holiday that offers a chance to drink green beer, and eat corned beef and cabbage! I had to throw in the sham to the ROCK. I thought it was fun for the holiday. I even made you this graphic:
I write about Twitter a lot because next to MySpace it has been one of the easiest platforms I have ever used professionally to grow Social Media Networking contacts. Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogs are limited to the people you bring to them, so it can be difficult to grow outside your existing network. Twitter is also been a great tool to increase traffic to other Social Media Platforms including Blogs, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace and even LinkedIn.I even have clients who report website increases of up to 5,000% through Twitter efforts.
When I first wrote this list, it was January 2010. I had just about 40,000 followers on Twitter, these days I have a few more, but I still try different stuff on my account, ALL the time. It is important to experiment to see what works for you. RSS feed aggregation, curating content including quotes/posts/great articles, Re-Tweeting others, strategically following people who follow people that I think I have things in common with, and many others.
During the process I am also developing my own Socialality…Socialality is different for everyone and just like your ‘Personality,’ your Socialality should reflect you or your brands unique attributes including behavioral, temperamental, emotional and mental that give you character. If you focus on your message and target people you share common ground, you WILL get results with Twitter!
I never tell people do things this way or do things that way. I firmly believe there is only one way that works. YOUR WAY. These are just suggestions that have worked for me!
I wrote this over 2 years ago and interestingly it’s as good as it ever was. I edited a few things and added some. enjoy!
DONT just GET LUCKY ~ GET RESULTS! 21 WAYS TO shamROCK TWITTER
1.) Determine & define your goals. >This will also help you manage your own expectations. I am here to party, meet work friends, learn about fitness, find great music.
2.) Use a photo of you that is engaging and shows your personality. >This will be your “calling cards” or online identity and how people will imagine you.
3.) Only use a logo when its for a company profile. >You wouldn’t walk up to someone at an event and say my name is Finger Candy Media. Also if you are a band use a great candid photo of your groups logo, again people don’t listen to a logo they listen to other
4.) Don’t forget to list a website on your profile! > I have even seen people make a special page on their blog welcoming Twitter followers and giving some info. You can also link to Facebook, LinkedIn, ReverbNation, Myspace. Make sure you test the url link to see that it works and sends people to a place where someone can get more information about you.
5.) Make sure that “Protect My Updates” is NOT checked, unless you want to protect your updates. > This is Social Media and “protecting” updates can come of like that you have something to hide. I also think people seem sneaky but that’s just my opinion.
6.) Write a bio that includes keywords that are strategic to the market you are trying to grow you/your brand too. > This is like the old elevator pitch or 30 second commercial we were learned in Marketing 101.
7.) Re-Tweet and Re-Tweet again! > This is a great way to validate others. It also shows that you are listening and care about what they are saying. I urge you to be sincere…Re-Tweet things you really do care about.
8.) Use the Twitter Search tool (http://search.twitter.com) to find subjects, keywords, trending topics that are important to you. > Also follow the people who are talking you discover.
9.) Ditch the default Twitter Egg Avatar and Cloud Background. > Nothing screams out, ‘I don’t care’ and if you don’t why should someone else.
10.) Promote Twitter on your other Social Media Networks and vice versa. > This is also GREAT for SEO-Search Engine Optimization.
11.) Consistently talk about your Social Media Participation when you are out in public. > Just like you ask for the sale, ask for the follow.
12.) Download a Twitter Application into your phone making it as easy as texting. > For every phone and every user there is an application. I recommend NOT using the default that comes generically with most phones. It doesn’t give you the really experience that an application like “Uber Social” does.
13.) You REALLY REALLY REALLY DO NOT need an automatic Direct Message. > It can come off as insincere and most people are put off by these. I have even unfollowed people for those “Validation Messages”.
14.) Try to thank EVERYONE who Re-tweets you and reply back to EVERYONE who @replies to you. > This was a lot easier in the beginning. This is really going to depend on the first tip ie what your goals for Social Media are.
15.) No one cares what you had for breakfast or the last time you made a bowel movement! > Unless you are a foodie, restaurant, celebrity or Depends there is such a thing as TMI. Even celebrities lose respect when they get stupid with some details.
16.) Try to make Social Media useful for your followers. > Provide information and tips that benefit THEM.
17.) Use the same Public Relations rules you use for yourself or your company. > Never forget that Twitter is an open-source platform and everyone who follows you can see what you are saying including family, employers, future employers, competition, frienemies, children, ex wives/husbands, relatives, neighbors, celebrities, brands.
18.) Use Twitter to have discussions with your followers. > This is a terrific place to get feedback and even crowdsource ideas. I don ti ALL the time! You can also ask people what they want from your company!
19.) Use a management platform or aggregation resource that helps you navigate Twitter. > Personally I use Tweetdeck and like Hootsuite it is cloud based (now-didn’t used to be when I originally wrote this). I also have friends that use Seismic , or some kind of a for a better understanding of how to use Twitter to its full potential.
20.) Use a url Shortener that you can track hits on links. > This helps me gauge how links to things I share are working for me and my brand. I use Bitly but hear from friends there is one built in to Hootsuite that a lot of them really like.
21.) Attend Twitter chats that match your interests. > If you like Country Music come to #CMchat on Monday nights at 6pPT/9pET. I also regularly attend #BlogChat on Sunday nights 6pPT/9pET. There are hundreds of online chats. If you want me to recommend for you based on your interest, Social Media or online endeavors just hit on Facebook, Twitter or leave a comment for me here on this blog.
Do you have any to add? This old dog loves learning new twicks!
***Originally I listed 20.) Try to spend at least a half hour a day on Twitter. & 21.) Try to spend only a half hour a day on Twitter! HA…..I realized that you need to spend as much as you need to get the results you want. This WILL be different for everyone.***
