When Opportunity Knocks…
…are you listening?
What are you doing while everything is happening around you? Not just on Social Networking and Social Media platform participation, but life in general?
Looking for a job…love interest…friends…investment opportunities… what motivates you to get up in the morning?
I know a lot of people, with a lot of things and they still aren’t happy. I look at Marilyn Monroe, one of the most beautiful women ever, she wasn’t happy. I know some very rich and successful business people but they aren’t happy either. Even a lot of married friends who aren’t happy.
Comparing Your Insides To Other Peoples Outsides
It’s an inside job to start. Its easy to admit to spending time admiring others possessions, status, relations but know that they have problems too. Without walking in someone else’s shoes the grass always seems greener…until you have to mow the lawn in their 4 inch platform heels.
In Social Media as in life we sometimes we look at other peoples success and we want what they have. Many people want a bigger audience and would like to market their product but they don’t want to do the work. They want instant gratification. For me, I get from EVERYTHING what you put in to it. With Social Media participation, in the beginning I spent way less time than I do now however my measurement of success was different too. Now that I manage many accounts on different levels, I am online all day long. So I am able to be very active (maybe even too active-LOL). But, if you want what I have, you have to be willing to do what I did. It was a lot of long hours, and to be honest, in the beginning the money was tough to get.
Take Your Own Inventory
While it’s easy to point out the flaws in others and let them know what you think they are doing wrong, but it’s true that,‘ if you spot you got it’! Taking your own inventory and looking at what motivates you to do what you do, bad or good, is a really big step.
Are you looking for accolades, dollars, affection, trophies?
Do you not like when someone spams you, constantly asks you for help but doesn’t offer to pay you for your time, or tells you what they think you should be doing differently? More than likely those are things you do not like in yourself. Pay attention to this ques.
I have found that by being client focused, meaning I always know that if my client is successfully reaching their goals, I am successful. When I sold Broadcast advertising, it used to annoy my colleagues that I never worried and/or calculated commissions religiously. I just did what needed to get done, and the check was usually pretty measurable. If I was answering the needs of my clients they were paying me whatever it took to get the results. This comes from developing a real interest in others. If you are selfish and self centered it’s going to be difficult to connect, understand and relate to others. It’s more than telling them you care, it comes down to showing them that you care.
It’s A Marathon Not A Sprint
I think it is important to put all the necessary tools together. If I am building something for the backyard, I go to Home Depot, buy the wood, the nails, the paint bring it home and put the plan into action.
There are many parallels to Social Media, almost an equation. Find what platforms you need, set up the accounts in a way that mirrors your marketing/PR strategy, use rules of engagement that make sense for your brand and time limitation, and then get er done
J.F.D.I.
Three frogs are sitting on a log, one makes a decision to leap off…now, how many frogs are left? Still Three! You can make a decision to do anything, but until you, as Lee Abrams says, J.F.D.I. (Just Freaking Do It) it’s only a decision. I don’t do anything to get second place. I come from a hardcore-Indy car-racing family, and my Grandpas philosophy was, “second place is the first loser.” A lot harsh, and I don’t think that you can say there is a winner or loser if you aren’t playing a game, but it is clear when you are participating in a Social Media optimization plan when it is successful and generating the goals you identified at the beginning of the process. If you are reaching your goals than you are probably winning.
I hope I made you think a little about what you are trying to do and what opportunity means to you. I know what I want and I have goals but there are little doorbells that have dinged throughout my life, and when I paid attention, planned the plan, did the work, they have turned into some pretty neat stuff!
What’s at your front door and are you ready for it?
