A Buggy Whip Industry?
Gary Shapiro from the Consumer Electronics Association
No issue is hotter for radio than performance rights, and recently we’ve heard from a new voice. Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, has not been shy in his criticism of the concept of the inclusion of FM chips in mobile devices. Gary will share his thoughts on this issue, but will also talk about the future of media and technology and what radio can look forward to.
Turning the Queen Mary:
Lee Abrams, Former Tribune Chief Innovation Officer
Lee Abrams has been in the news a lot lately for his departure as Chief Innovation Office of The Tribune Company. But there is an important story behind the headlines – the challenges in taking an old media product and changing the culture and practices in order to survive and thrive in a new, complex, and competitive media world. Lee is a former radio consultant as well as as the Chief Programming Officer at XM, so he knows the radio space and our challenges as well as anyone.
Using The Backchannel
Stephen Clark is the WXYZ/Channel 7 Action News at 6 Anchorman
Stephen Clark is an anchorman at Channel 7 in Detroit. But if you think you know how TV news is being gathered, think again. Stephen has initiated a novel audience interactive program – The Backchannel – using Twitter to communicate with his audience as he’s putting together stories and during the newscasts themselves. The Backchannel is an innovative feedback loop that might just change television news. And it has applications for News/Talk radio stations, as well as for personalities and teams who are bold enough to give the audience a seat at the table. Stephen joins the Summit to discuss how the Backchannel works and how it can remake radio.
Is This Radio?
In the past several months, major radio brands like WTOP in Washington DC and National Public Radio have announced that they are dropping the term, “radio,” from the way they refer to themselves. They are doing this because of their belief that “radio” is much more than what comes out of transmitters and towers. Joel Oxley, Bonneville’s Senior Regional VP and manager of WTOP will be joined by NPR’s Senior Director of Product Development, Michael Yoch, and the RAB’s President/CEO Jeff Haley in a discussion exploring just what is radio today and in the future, and how should broadcasters define it.
