Beautiful, Smart, Bass Player & Can Carve Any Wave: Meet @JoyceCherrier
Meet the beautiful, kind, athletic, helpful, fit…I could go for days…Joyce Cherrier. A health and fitness coach advising clients online and her local community.
After learning to surf in California, Joyce moved to Maui, Hawaii in 1981 and was introduced to the sport of windsurfing. She became a professional windsurfer and spent the next decade competing and working for several companies testing and endorsing products.
While continuing to be a freelance sports and fitness model in Maui, Joyce became interested in personal training and became the manager of a fitness center in Wailuku and co-owned a health food store in Paia, where she was head of the vitamin and supplement department.
Now a resident of the New Orleans area, she continues to be dedicated to helping people live healthy lifestyles, drawing on her 25-plus years of experience in health and fitness, consulting individually with clients, and writing about health and wellness. She also is a stay at home mom, homeschooler and avid bass guitar player.
How did you get started in your career?
I started surfing at 16 and it all snowballed from there. On Maui, it’s easy to live a healthy lifestyle and once I began professionally windsurfing it opened the doors to all kinds of opportunities.
What are your fondest childhood memories?
Probably fishing with my dad and going to the beach when I lived on Guam.
What are your favorite things to do?
Surf, windsurf, standup paddle board, all types of exercise and sports, playing the bass guitar and hanging with my girlfriends on Maui.
What current event has your eyes and ears? And what are you doing about it?
The oil spill in the gulf. Living on the gulf coast now, the reality is all too clear and near. I’m not doing enough. It all makes my heart sad.
How do you use Social Media in your industry for productivity?
I use twitter mostly to communicate with clients, build relationships and share info. Social Media for me is the office, but also it allows me to interact and learn about so many things I find of interest and meet the greatest of people.
What inspires you when you write?
I’m inspired by the rising rate of obesity and the needs of people around me online and off to be healthier. A year ago I wouldn’t be saying this, but I can’t imagine not writing about it.
What is your favorite website
Do I have to pick one? I’m really into copyblogger right now, and love to find great stuff on Alltop. I love The Oatmeal & The Onion, Tremendous News and learning about wordpress because I hate being clueless about stuff.
When you were younger what did you want to be when you grew up? Why?
Since I can remember I wanted to be a marine biologist. But I guess it just wasn’t in the cards. I also took off to go surfing instead of class so that might have had something to do with it.
Where are you answering these questions from right now?
At my desk. How boring is that?
What are you wearing?
My bikini.
If you had a Super Power what would it be?
To breathe under water. Is that considered a super power?
Which famous person do you admire?
Jacques Cousteau because watching his shows when I was a kid inspired my love for the ocean.
What is your favorite movie? Why
I don’t have one particular favorite, but Raising Arizona is one of my all time favs.
Favorite snack?
Nuts, because I don’t feel guilty about eating them!
What are 3 items you CAN NOT live without?
A bikini, sunglasses and my phone.
How do you balance your life – mate, children, job?
I don’t really think it’s all ever actually balanced. Family is always first.
If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be, and what would say to them?
I would love to meet Flea, the bass player for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I would be in such awe that I would be at a loss for words, which rarely happens.
What is your hobby or do you collect anything? Why?
Love seashells and beach glass and collect them whenever I’m at a beach.
What chore to you hate? Why?
What chore don’t I hate?

Both! Except Okra. *Yuk*
Mac or PC?
A PC, sadly.
Ginger or Mary Ann? Which one are you more like?
Mary Ann!
Craziest thing you have ever done?
A girlfriend and I on a double date, windsurfed across one of the most dangerous of ocean channels between Maui and Molokai with two guys….4 of us on a tandem windsurf board, two sails….I didn’t know how to windsurf yet. I learned after that.
